#280, Not to Worry, Sunday, 06-24-2007
Text: Matthew 6:25-34
Theme: If God is your Father, you can overcome worry.
INTRODUCTION:
- Do you have any stress in your life?
- How is stress different from worry?
- Worry is a way we can choose to handle stress. The opposite of worry is trust.
- Worry is a faithless attitude we embrace.
- Because we all face stress, worry will be a battle.
How do we handle and overcome worry? What does Jesus tell us about “Not to Worry?”
- Receive the Father’s commands.
- Jesus said “do not worry” (three times)
- Do not worry about your life (v 25)
- Do not worry about daily needs (food, clothing) (v 31)
- Do not worry about tomorrow (v 34)
- Worrying doesn’t accomplish anything.
- It’s like “rocking chair” Christianity.
- South African saying: “If you worry you’ll die, if you don’t worry, you’ll die. Why worry?
- The Father wants His children to receive His Word.
- “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)
- “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
- Reflect on the Father’s creation.
- Jesus told us to look around.
- “Look at the birds of the air.” (v 26)
- “See how the lilies of the field grow.” (v 28)
- The birds don’t plant or store up food.
- The flowers don’t stress and labor.
- “Since God takes such good care of the lower orders of creation, God will certainly take care of the crown of His creation.” – Leon Morris
- Apply what you see to yourself.
- Have faith in God.
- “Oh you of little faith.” (v 30)
- He has always provided, He will provide.
- Refuse to give in to worry.
- Worry won’t add a single hour. (v 27)
- Worry just weighs us down.
- “An anxious heart weighs a man down” (Proverbs 12:25)
- Most of what we worry about never happens.
- An average person’s anxiety is focused on:
- 40% - of things that will never happen
- 30% - of things about the past that can’t be changed
- 12% - of criticism by others, mostly untrue
- 10% - about health, which gets worse with worry
- 8% - about real problems that will be faced
- Reject the “coping style” of the world.
- “For the pagans run after all these things.” (v 32)
- People not in relationship with the Father have a lot to worry about.
- They run to and fro trying to meet their own needs.
- They see themselves as their own god, source.
- “Your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” (v 32)
- Wash your spirit of worry by the water of prayer.
- Just keep doing what you know is right in the face of worry. (don’t panic)
- Remain faithful to your Father’s mission.
- Three key words to fight worry: Father, faith and first.
- Decide to seek God’s Kingdom first (Matthew 6:33)
- Take care of God’s will and He will take care of you.
- What does this mean to seek God first?
- Be faithful in your week (set aside a time to gather)
- Be faithful in your day (prayer, word)
- Be faithful in your hour (think on Him)
- Be faithful in your finances (tithe)
CONCLUSION:
You can overcome worry.

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPH, 06-24-2007
June 24, 2007 by PastorMark.
“How can I know God’s will for me?” people often ask. While there is no simple formula, there is an all-important first step. In Romans 12:1-2, Paul connects this step with being able to know and do God’s will: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” The first step in discovering God’s will is complete dedication of yourself (body, soul, spirit) to the Lord Himself. The Lord always guides and takes care of that which belongs to Him.

Finding Your True Identity
June 17, 2007 by PastorDave.
Finding Your True Identity, Sunday, 06-17-2007
Title: Finding Your True Identity
Text: Malachi 4:5, 6
INTRODUCTION
- The Lone Ranger, Zorro, & Superman; all men with secret identities, no one knew who they really were.
- Identity = the distinguishing character or personality of an individual: individuality.
- Who was that masked man? Heroes to the public, all of them revered.
- Everyone (man) needs an identity; it provides status & self esteem among other things.
- Dads have searched for their identity outside of their relationship with Jesus Christ and we have become disillusioned and are facing a great identity crisis. Who Am I?
- Position Man: Identified by my title in life
- Possession Man: Identified by what I have gained and achieved in life
- Pleasure Man: Identified by my recreation & hobbies
Today I want to sound a cry; herald a message, set off the alarm, be a voice crying in the wilderness to all fathers. Dad please look for your identity in a personal, daily, alive relationship with Jesus Christ and his Word.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF DAD LOOKS FOR HIS TRUE IDENTITY IN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST?
- HE WILL DISCOVER HIS TRUE MISSION
- Malachi 4: 5, 6- “See I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”
- Luke 1:17 – “And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children.”
- The God-given mission of every dad was prophesied in the O.T., confirmed here in the N.T., and was the message of the forerunner of the Lord.
- God addressed only one area of interest before the great and dreadful day of the Lord….and that area was the heart of dad’s turned toward their children.
- The one relationship that God focused on was father, child.
- Dad when you focus your identity solely in Jesus Christ He will make clear His mission for you and your heart. (Your children)
- Challenge: Investing your time, talents, and testimonies into your children.
- What we spend our time on, invest our talents in and talk about; that’s where our hearts are. That is where are treasure is.
- Is your heart turned towards your children; ask them, your wife, and your parents.
- HE WILL RECEIVE HIS TRUE ASSIGNMENT
- Proverbs 23:26 – “My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.”
- The God-given assignment of every dad is to pursue until you posses our children’s heart.
- Son, daughter, I want your heart. In other words I want to be the major influence in the decisions you are going to make in life.
- The one who gets our children’s hearts wins! (Friends, culture, Satan, pop-culture heroes etc…)
- Too many of us Dad are trying to subdue our children with the law, when what God wants us to do is woo them with our love. (that’s how God got you)
- Challenge: Listen to them, not get lazy in our pursuit of their heart, and our lusts which cause them to shrink back from giving their hearts to us.
- The end of this verse is very important, we gain our kids hearts only when we give them the freedom to observe our ways, we must live transparent before them.
- Hannah & the grocery store:
- I do the grocery shopping & take one child each week with me.
- My daughter helped me one day and we came to the check out
- We put the groceries through and went home and everyone helped.
- 1/2 hr. later my wife said you need to talk to Hannah she is crying & upset, she’s nervous you are going to leave us…. why I said….
- She said you were “staring” at the magazines as you checked out.
- Now, I immediately began to defend myself…I didn’t even pick one up, how dare she… let me talk to her.
- The Lord helped me at that moment because this was a win your kids heart moment, I first assured her that I am not and would never leave my family.
- Then I asked her to forgive me, she saw, I didn’t even see it, a touch of lust, something in my eyes or spirit that I didn’t detect, but her sensitive spirit did, and it bothered her…a lot.
- I asked her if, when we go to the grocery store again she would help me be better at the check out, I gave her the right to remind me.
- The next time came, we came to the check out, I had thought about it, but as we were checking out the Spirit reminded me… and I turned to and said, honey, how I am doing the magazines…big smile, real good dad, thanks. And I knew I had just succored a big piece of a ten-year old girl’s heart. (let your eyes observe my ways)
- Dad when you focus your identity solely on your relationship with Jesus Christ He will make clear your true assignment given directly from His Word to you (pursing the heart of your children).
- HE WILL BE MADE AWARE OF HIS GREATEST WEAKNESS
- Colossians 3:21- “Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.”
- The greatest weakness or danger every dad faces is simple, to provoke their children to anger.
- An angry spirit will never win the heart of a child, never. It may put them in their place for a short while, but when the time comes they will rebel and run.
- The angry dad tries to “power parent” you will do it or else.
- A child living with angry dad will (according to Scripture) become discouraged.
- A discouraged child is a sitting duck for the enemy.
- Challenge: Submit, Surrender, and Serve
- Submit your anger to the Lord, surrender your actions to His Word and serve your children instead of forcing them.
- Rebecca & the meeting:
- One Friday evening I prepared my daughters for an early Saturday morning event that I wanted them to go to with their mother.
- One of my daughters got up and just couldn’t get herself together and was running super late. The tension was beginning to mount in the house.
- I went in her room to check on her and she was undressing and decided she wouldn’t be ready in time so she wasn’t going. Well I lost it. I got right in her face and blew up
- You will be going, you will get dressed now, and I saw her eyes get big & her face turn white as her father unleashed his anger on her.
- While 5 minutes later her wife came down and made an appeal to me, that she would never be ready in time and that she is not in any shape to go. I didn’t know what to do.
- So I told her, to get downstairs as my wife and other daughter left, and eat breakfast and get your bible because you need to hear from God!
- So her and I sat down together and both of us began to read, but I was just angry.
- I could see the discouragement on her face; I had broken her spirit with my anger.
- Now you might say, pastor, but you were right. Maybe, but using anger to control and get your way makes you always wrong in God’s eyes.
- As I read my bible a verse jumped out and slapped my spiritual face…
- 2 Corinthians 2:8 – “I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm our love for him.”
- And I was rebuked. I turned toward my daughter and asked her to forgive her father for his angry words and spirit and reaffirmed how much I loved her and that we will just learn from this. And we hugged and I could sense the burden lifted from her spirit. (and I knew I had just captured another little piece of a 12 yr. olds heart)
- Dad when you focus your identity solely on your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ He will make you aware of your greatest weakness and give you power to overcome it. (provoke not our children to anger)
- HE WILL BE MAKING LIFE-LONG MEMORIES
- Deuteronomy 6:7 – “Impress them on your children.”
- One thing a Spiritual leader dad does is purpose to make life-long memories.
- Rose Bowl- January 1, 1981 (stand up if you have a ticket to the 1981 rose bowl)
- Promise Keepers –fall 1996, Shea Stadium
- Sharing life memories & Spiritual memories.
- Make memories with your children, that they will burn or be impressed on their heart.
- What are you planning right now that your children will be talking about 10, 25 yrs. from now?
CLOSING
- I want to close with three really tough statements to dad. Too many of us dad’s have spent our time decorating our lives with Christianity instead of finding our true identity in Jesus Christ.
- Your children do not need a “Christian” dad; they need a Spiritual Leader.
- Dad, your family doesn’t need increase commitment from you; they need you to surrender to God’s call on your life as dad & spiritual leader of the home.
- Dad, I would like to give you and opportunity before you leave this morning to take a bold step of faith and state your intentions.
- Whether you’ve done a good job or not, from this point on you are going to pursue your God given mission to win the heart of your children, place your identity in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and let Holy Spirit transform you into the spiritual leader you are designed to be.
- It all begins for every dad in here at the foot of the cross; this is where you will get the wisdom, love, power and endurance to be successful.
- Come join me dad, lets turn our heart to our children so they will turn their hearts to us and then we can point them to Jesus.
- Any dad need to get anger or lust confessed and under the cleansing blood of Jesus?
PRACTICE:
- Forgive Me
- I Love You
- I Need You
- What Do You Think
- I Was Wrong

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPH, 06-17-2007
June 17, 2007 by PastorMark.
Have you ever noticed how certain smells trigger memories? A while ago I was walking through a hospital, and the strong smell of the floor cleaner brought me back to elementary school! The Bible connects scent with thoughts by declaring, “A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth” (Ecclesiastes 7:1). When we think of a person’s name, we think of his/her life, character, and influence on us. Therefore, a person’s name “triggers” our heart with thoughts and memories. On this Father’s Day, may we as dads so live for Jesus that we leave our children the fragrance of Christ. When they think of us, may they “smell” the aroma of our Lord.

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPH, 06-10-2007
June 10, 2007 by PastorMark.
It has been observed, “You can’t outgive God.” Christians through the ages have experienced God’s provision and blessing as they have given to God and others. In the first century church we see where the believers in Antioch decided to help the believers in Judea because of a famine. Acts 11:29 states, “The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea.” The phrase, “according to his ability,” implies that some gave less and some gave more, according to their personal ability. Today, as we consider our pledge to “Take the Land,” the Lord will not only enable us to give but also continue to bless us and take care of all of our needs.

A Willing Heart
June 3, 2007 by PastorMark.
#279, A Willing Heart, Sunday 06-03-2007
Text: 1 Chronicles 29
Theme: God accomplishes His work through people whose hearts are willing.
Introduction:
- The most photographed site in the world is the temple mount area in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock.
- This site was once dominated by arguably the greatest structure ever built – the temple of Solomon.
- King David had it in his heart to build the temple.
- God told David it would be his son Solomon.
- The later years of David’s life, he dedicated to preparing the work.
Text: 1 Chronicles 29 - God accomplishes His work through people whose hearts are willing.
- Let’s look at what happened then and there.
- David knew the task was from God. (v 1)
- “He (David) gave him (Solomon) the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind” (I Chronicles 28:12)
- “The task is great” (v 1)
- “this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God” (v 1 b)
- David was willing to become personally involved.
- David encouraged his son Solomon. (I Chronicles 28:20)
- David gathered the leaders and people together. (I Chronicles 28:21)
- David used his influence to direct resources. (vv 2-3)
- David gave personally. (v 3)
- “Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my god, over and above everything I have provided.” (v 3)
- As a result of David’s lead, the other leaders became personally involved.
- They “gave willingly.” (v 6)
- They gave generously. (v 7)
- They gave creatively (precious stones) (v 8 )
- As a result of David and the leaders, the people came on board.
- The people rejoiced at the willing response of the leaders …” (v 9)
- David proclaimed, “And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.” (v 17)
- What does all this have to do with us here and now?
- Tuesday morning, March 13, 2007
- My father-in-law is ready to sell and wants you to have the first opportunity to buy.”
- Background … this church last purchased property in1981.
- Pastor Stanley and leaders asked the Eldridge family about selling in the 80’s.
- I have asked a few times, our expansion committee has asked … no deal.
- For years we have been wondering what to do.
- About 2-3 years ago we experimented with the possibility of an addition. (cost: $3.6 million)
- My heart wasn’t in it.
- Our expansion committee kept meeting.
- We were the “waiting” committee.
- We also prayed, fasted and saved money.
- On Friday. March 19, 2007 I called to work out a price, negotiation.
- That morning’s devotions: “Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with one, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.” (1 Chronicles 4:10)
- After the deal was agreed, it occurred to us about the property next to that one.
- In building something you usually have to get the opinions of the neighbors.
- The house at 866 was sitting for about 1 year.
- We did the math for both properties and came up with a monthly payment of 4,200+ (about the same amount we were paying in 1995)
- On April 19, the members spoke by a vote.
- “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” (Acts 15:28)
- Before this we had a dream, but no room.
- God has given us a dream and an open door (new sanctuary, youth center, classes, gym, fellowship hall, etc…)
- We voted to “Take the Land”
- Existing property: 3.9 acres
- New properties: 2.13 acres
- Combined: 6.03 acres (55% increase in land)
- Frontage: increase from 300’ to 500’.
