A Good and Perfect Gift
May 31, 2009 by PastorDave.
A Good and Perfect Gift, Pastor David McIntosh, Sunday, 05-31-2009
Text: James 1:17
INTRODUCTION
- I want to invite you to stand and read this verse of Scripture out loud with me.
- James 1:17 – “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (invite to sit down)
- Acts 2:1, 4 – “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place…All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
- Acts 2:32-33 – “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.”
- Acts 2:38 – “Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
- AND YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
- James 1:17 (again) – “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
- The baptism in the Holy Spirit: speaking with other tongues.
The Gift of a “PERSONAL PENTECOST” (a Good & Perfect Gift)
- What I wish to share with you this morning is NOT the gift of tongues with interpretation to follow. (1 Cor. 12 & 14 talk about this public gift of the Spirit and how it is limited in its distribution and its public exercise is to be closely governed.)
- I want to share with you my own personal experience with the baptism in the Holy Spirit and the speaking in other tongues. (Now I am not from a Pentecostal background)
- 1 Corinthians 14:5 – “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues.”
- V.14 – “For if I pray in a tongue my spirit prays…I will pray with my spirit…I will sing with my spirit.”
- V. 18 – “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.”
- V.39 – “Do not forbid speaking in tongues.”
THE GIFT ILLUSTRATION
- It has been said that everything we receive from God is delivered to us when we receive Jesus as Savior and Lord.
- And this is true, but there is a practical element to that.
- The application of each resource (or gift) for our lives depends upon our unwrapping of what God is giving us.
- In other words inside the GIFT OF Jesus is all the resources and gifts of God that He blesses us with.
- We need to take, open and receive for ourselves God’s gifts to us.
- Here is the Ultimate Gift, Jesus, but inside of Jesus are His gifts that I need.
- Here is the gift of mercy, grace, truth, promises of God, reconciliation, forgiveness, wisdom, understanding, healing, SPEAKING IN OTHER TONGUES.
- This gift was one that took me time to understand why I needed it and time to embrace it and say to myself, I need this in my life!
BENEFITS OF THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
- 1 Corinthians 14:2 – “For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.”
- There are times in my life where I don’t need to speak to men but I desperately need to communicate to God spirit to Spirit!
- Sometimes I need to pour out in my heavenly language mysteries that are being communicated spirit to spirit. My relationship with the Lord must have this component to become as intimate as God desires Him and me to be.
- V.4 – “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.”
- Edify = to profit spiritually, to build.
- Yes I want to edify the church, however how can I do that unless I am edified myself, spiritually? I need to be built up as a Christian, in order to be a blessing to the church.
- The hunger to experience the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues does not arise from a need to be noticed or achieve a goal, yes I did it.
- But the hunger & desire arise from a deep longing that in my personal walk with the Lord I need to communicate on a level beyond my natural means. I need to speak to God in my spirit and I need to get alone with the Lord and be built up spiritually. (to be spiritually edified)
- Acts 10:45-47 – “The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” (It’s ok to be astonished & water baptism is different.)
PROMISED RIVERS
- John 7:37-39 – “On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, if anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not yet been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”
- River = a torrent flood
John 4:14 – (the woman at the well) – “The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water.” - Well = fountain that springs forth.
- Jesus is describing things that occur within the believer’s experience.
- The well of eternal life answers our soul’s primary need for salvation.
- The rivers of the Holy Spirit answer our personal need to be fully empowered to live our life in all of the fullness of God with regard to relationship and responsibilities.
CLOSE:
James 1:17 – “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK
May 31, 2009 by PastorMark.
Salvation is something like space exploration; the more you find out, the more you realize there is to explore. We don’t ever have to become bored in our salvation! If we sincerely love Jesus and actively share our faith, we will continue to stand amazed at this gift of salvation. The Psalmist declared, “My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure” (71:15). He knew he would never completely fathom the depth (measure) of God’s vast salvation, but he found joy in exploring and telling others. Let’s praise God today that we are saved and belong to Him!

PENTECOST
May 30, 2009 by admin.
PENTECOST
Feast of Weeks or Shavu’ot
How long will the fruit on the tree remain if we cut off the tree from its roots? Not long! “No Roots, No Fruits!” As God’s people, we need to draw upon the nourishment from deep down in the roots of the Tree that our branches have been grafted into.
Let’s look at Pentecost, for instance. This coming Saturday, the 6th of Silvan (May 30, 2009), marks the celebration of Pentecost or the Feast of Weeks. Gentile believers tend to think of Pentecost only as the time in Acts 2 when the promised Holy Spirit came upon the disciples in the Upper Room, causing them to speak in other tongues. What awesome power! Yeshua came back to dwell in His people. A great “Act 2,” but let’s take a look at “Act 1,” so to speak, to round out the picture.
Why did the Spirit come on that day? In the Old Testament, Pentecost (50) was an appointment time with God (see Leviticus 23). (It’s a good idea to keep an appointment with Yahweh!) It was the fourth of seven specific appointments –all of which were extremely significant (Passover, for instance, was the first; the Feast of Tabernacles was the seventh). Pentecost was 50 days from Passover and was the time of the wheat harvest. The people would thank Adonai for providing the basic staple of life. It was also believed to be the exact time that Moses received the Law/Commandments (Torah) from God on the fiery Mount Sinai. It was a time when the Israelites received the Word of God and became betrothed to God as a people and nation.
Now, Yeshua the Messiah had told His disciples in Luke 24: 49, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Also, at the Passover Seder (the Last Supper), He had already spoken about sending them the Holy Spirit. Even John the Baptist had prophesied that Jesus would baptize them with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11).
Picture the scene back then. Jesus had left, and His followers were eagerly waiting for His Promise. But, they were also counting the 50 days up to the celebration of the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost. Then, suddenly, on the exact date, Yeshua comes upon them with tongues of fire, fulfilling His promise and fulfilling the shadows that had pointed to Him in the Feast of Weeks. The True Bread (Wheat) from heaven descends upon them. What an appointment! Life had been assured! Whereas out of the fire at Sinai came the Holy Law, now comes the fire of the Holy Spirit! The Holy Law that had been written on tablets of stone was now written on tablets of human hearts (2 Corinthians 3:3; Hebrews 8:10)! Whereas the Israelites in the desert became betrothed, now both Jew and Gentile became the Bride! What a celebration! At Sinai, 3,000 died, but in Acts 2, 3,000 were saved!
This same fire–this same Holy Spirit–is offered to all those who expect His impartation, believe the words of Yeshua, wait, and arrive at the appointed time. He is here! He is being poured out in these last days! Cling to the Root of Jesse as the rain of His Spirit pours down.

A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK
May 24, 2009 by PastorMark.
Some people seem to think they don’t need God or they don’t want to “bother” God with their issues. In Luke 11:5-8, Jesus tells us a parable about a person who receives help from his friend because he is bold enough to persist in asking. If you have faith in God, you will bring your requests to Him. In following up on the parable of the friend, Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” (Luke 11:9-10). Our Father wants us, His children, to pray—to come boldly into His presence!

A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK
May 17, 2009 by PastorMark.
Trying times demand trust. Someone once told me, “I wish I could believe like you do.” The greatest issue is not so much that we cannot believe but that we will not believe. Faith is a gift of God that is activated when we turn our lives to God and choose to obey Him. In Psalm 31:14-15, David said, “But I trust in you, O Lord; I say you are my God. My times are in your hands.” Faith is the act of stretching ourselves out on God’s altar and letting Him use our lives for His glory. When we dedicate ourselves to God and trust Him with our lives and the future, He will show himself faithful!

UP AND COMING
- Choir Rehearsal (May 17). If you’d like to be part of the ongoing choir to rehearse seasonal and special music, stop by the Welcome Center to sign up or see Pastor Rafael.
- Hospitality Network Rotation Week (May 17-24). How time flies when you’re doing something for people in the name of the Lord! It has been five years since MIHN re-opened its doors, and we have been regularly involved as one of the 11 host churches. During those five years, 115 adults with their 151 children have been helped—for a total of 266 people who were homeless for various reasons. The numbers are impressive, but let’s remember that each number represents a living, breathing person who needs help: children who have no control over their fate and parents and grandparents who find them-selves homeless and in dire situations. Volunteers are the backbone of this ministry. At the sign-up table in the foyer, there are many open slots that need to be filled. Our need is even greater this time because some of our regular volunteers will be on vacation. Won’t you stop by the table and see if there is an open slot that you can fill as an overnight host or a two-hour host or to bring a hot, nourishing evening meal?
- Pentecost Sunday Service (May 31). Make plans to attend a special service on Pentecost Sunday, 6:00 PM, at the Bread of Life Assembly of God church in Westminster. Rev. Charles Crabtree, President of Zion Bible College, will be speaking.
- Child Dedication (June 7). If you desire to dedicate your child to the Lord, please pick up an application card at the Welcome Center, complete it, and turn it in.
- Water Baptism (June 14). Please fill out an application card (at the Welcome Center) and turn it in if you desire to be baptized.
