A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK

Without a good immunity system, our bodies come under attack and we become weak and sick. In our spiritual person, we also face attacks which come in the form of sick thoughts and attitudes. To allow these “germs” to attack us causes us anxiety and soul sickness. God has a remedy. Proverbs 17:22 declares, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” As we choose to express thanks to God, we find our hearts lifted and strengthened. The germs die off and are replaced with a healthy, merry heart. My prayer is for all of us to know the joy of Jesus as we observe Thanksgiving.

A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK

The prophet Habakkuk was confused. Why is there so much sin in the world? Destruction, violence, strife, and conflict abound, but God doesn’t seem to hear. Habakkuk honestly and prayerfully voiced his concerns to God. The Lord revealed to him how he should respond in trying times. Here are Habakkuk’s words: “I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines … yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength …” (3:16b-19). There will be times when we will not understand the injustices in the world. We must be patient, hopeful, and joyful in God, and willing to find our strength in Him alone—no matter what happens!

What more can be said about the elections? Living in the most liberal state, we once again feel the disappointment of candidates voted into office who ignore God and His truth. However, God, in His sovereignty, gives people what they want and waits patiently for repentance when things don’t turn out as expected. For the believer, our expectation is in God himself. As we walk with Jesus, we present hope and true life for those disillusioned by lies and corruption. Best of all, in the end, God wins! “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever” (Daniel 2:44). Our future is always better than the present!

For many people, “missions” conjures up images of faraway places and special people who are called to go there. What did mission mean to Jesus? At the last prayer meeting before the Crucifixion, Jesus prayed, “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do” (John 17:4). The mission globally (“Go into all the world”) must translate into the mission personally. God doesn’t just send others to carry His message around the world. If you are His child, He has called you to carry His light and message to your everyday world. You and I are created with a purpose: to glorify God by completing His mission for our lives.

A WORD FROM PASTOR MARK

In the Old Testament, national emergencies prompted the sounding of trumpets (rams’ horns). People everywhere would drop what they were doing and gather together to pray and decide what to do. The prophet Joel proclaimed, “Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly (2:15). When we planned today’s fast day a few months ago, we had no way of knowing there would be a crisis in America at this time. This is a time of stress and fear … and great opportunity to share the hope of Jesus! Will we, His people, urgently seek Him at this time? Or will God’s warning be wasted as we “sleep in the light”? May we rise to new heights as we fall on our knees, crying out to God for those who so desperately need Him.

What does God value most in His followers? King David is described as a man after God’s own heart. Why did God say this about David? Was it because David praised and worshiped? Was it because he wrote songs and inspired Psalms? Was it because he developed gifts and talents? These are all vitally important, but the secret is discovered in Acts 13:22: “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” Our love for God is proven by our obedience. God is looking for people who will always say “Yes” to Him!
