First John 3:24 states, “Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.” The Bible reveals in this one verse the practical and spiritual relationship we are to have with God. We see the harmony of obedience to the teachings that Jesus gives us (His commands) with the witness of the Spirit that dwells inside of us. As we worship the Lord together, be sensitive to the practical message God has for your life today along with the ever-present need to be “Spirit-touched.” May God richly reward you as you hunger and thirst for Him!

INTRODUCTION

In the story “A Cranberry Thanksgiving” grandma makes the greatest cranberry bread in the land and a city slicker is trying to steal her secret ingredient for this cranberry bread.

Grandma uses something that is so powerful everyone wants her cranberry bread!

Well, in a day when many are seeking answers to life we Christians should be demonstrating the power of Jesus Christ in our personal lives to attract others to Him.

Instead, multitudes of believers seem powerless against the same forces that destroy the world.

Marriages are falling apart, raising children that respect others, anger, bitterness, addictions to sex and pornography are reigning in the land whether you claim to be Christian or not.

What is the missing ingredient that will propel us to be genuine overcomes of the sins that destroy in this world? That our light would shine with words & works!

EXAMPLE (Psalm 106:9-16)

Read verses 9:11 – “He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it dried up; So He led them through the depths, As through the wilderness. He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. The waters covered their enemies; There was not one of them left:

V.12-16 on the PowerPoint:

They believed his words & sang his praise (look what God did for me!)

They forgot his works…causing them to not wait for His counsel

This led to lusting after and testing God

God’s consequence is He gives them what they want (but leanness to the soul)

They then envy God’s leaders (Moses & Aaron)

Now look at this pattern, God does something they don’t deserve, limited belief and praise, they soon forget, turn from God’s ideas, this leads to lust, consequences and envy.

This is a picture of what happens over and over again to believers today.

Listen to what James 4:1-4 says; “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasure. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God?”

Wow, that’s tough, that hurts! What is that secret ingredient that can change everything?

How do we live everyday in the ways of our faith? How do break out of this cycle that we see in the O.T. people of God and the N.T. church of believers?

THE SECRET INGREDIENT

Romans 1:4-6 – “And who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him and for his name sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.”

We received GRACE to call people to obedience that comes from faith!

The missing ingredient is GRACE. It’s not that we haven’t heard of grace but rather we have misunderstood it.

To many believers today, being under grace means that they are not under any obligation to fulfill the righteousness of the Law of God but are under a covering of God that allows them to do whatever they think is right and God will approve…this is grace.

We need to receive a fresh biblical understanding of God’s grace for our lives!

GOD’S GRACE FROM GOD’S WORD

In Romans 1:5 we saw that we received grace to call people to obedience.

Look at Romans 5:21 – “So that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

We see that grace rules through righteousness it is not a ticket for unrighteousness.

Romans 6:14 – “For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.”

So one of the main purposes for grace is to help us work out God’s righteousness in our everyday lives.

This can only be done through the power of God not the efforts of man.

Listen to Ephesians 3:7 – “I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.”

You see, grace is more than God’s loving favor; it is God’s gift of power to do His will in our lives!

2 Peter 1:2-4 – “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

Peter is speaking of multiplied grace as divine power by which we have given great & precious promises that we can partake of the divine nature and not the corruption of lust!

From God’s Word we see that grace is a gift of divine power that God freely gives us so that we can obey Him, live in righteousness, overcome sin and partake in His divine nature!

GOD’S GRACE OUR TEACHER

If anyone is going to truly partake of God’s grace you have to have one thing…a teachable spirit.

Titus 2:11,12 – “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”

We learn here that grace is our teacher and we are her students. Grace teaching us (through divine power) to say no to ungodliness & worldly lusts. Grace is not going to just cover over these things, grace teaches us to say no to our way and yes to God’s way!

Are you teachable?

See the law demands, but gives no strength to obey it, grace promises and gives power to perform for us. The Law points its finger, grace opens its arms.

But are we willing to see and be students in the school of biblical grace?

WHERE TO BEGIN

Well we know that grace is a gift so you can’t earn it. But there is a qualification that God is looking for.

James 4:6 – “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

So we see that God considers the opposite of grace is pride.

Pride is doing it on my own, pride is reserving the right to make final decisions, pride resists grace!

Humility is the key to this incredible gift, daily humility may I add.

So here is the first step, completely accept and confess our personal failure and inability to live life in a way that pleases God.

With this, we realize our helplessness to do anything good that God accepts, and unless God’s grace moves in my life I really can’t do anything, I am helpless and all the gifts and talents and experience I have won’t do me any good, save for the grace of God.

In 2 Corinthians Paul said, “For when I am weak then I am strong,” this is what he was talking about.

Humility is realizing that I need God’s help for every decision in my life.

ALTAR CALL

I would like to open the altars and invite anyone who knows they need the grace of God (the favor, power and desire) to fill their lives like never before that they would become partakers of the divine nature and escaping the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Grace to say no to this world and yes to righteousness living!

Grace to obey, grace to grow in faith, grace for self control, grace to overcome!

Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” It truly is the word of God that is the source of wisdom and teaching! With these alive in our lives the joy they produce causes us to sing unto the Lord spiritual songs from the heart. If we allow the word to dwell in us we will become a people of praise and worship to the Lord! He tells us that He inhabits the praises of His people, so His presence will be strong and life changing! It is my prayer that you will sing unto the Lord today and allow His word to dwell in your life! You won’t regret it!

In Deuteronomy 32:9 we read, “The Lord’s portion is his people.” What an incredible understanding God gives us of His heart. There is nothing that has been created that God hasn’t created. He owns everything and is the maker of all things. His portion or what belongs to Him is without measure. We learn from this Old Testament verse of scripture that God is very specific about what He wants. God wants you, “his people.” You are God’s son! You are God’s daughter! You are what God is interested in so much that He sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for you. God wants to have a relationship with you every day. Today is your day to draw close to the God who loves you!

So, the enemy will take God’s design for marriage and make-up a counterfeit and sell it to couples so they choose it over God’s design.

God’s design is shared in 1 Corinthians 11:3 – “Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

God speaks to us, protects us, teaches us and leads us from inside of His Perfect Design.

The enemy’s desire is for husbands and wives to work outside of this design.

This picture describes our RESPONSIBILITY to God. (show 1 Cor. 11:3)

This picture describes our RELATIONSHIP to God (Galatians 3: 28-29; 1 Peter 3:7)

Gal. 3:28,29 – “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (value of our God designed role)

1 Peter 3:7 – “Husbands, dwell with them (wives) according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life.”

This is a test of our virtue (responsibility); this is picture of our value (relationship).

The roles of male, female, husband & wife are still our responsibility; but through the finished work of Jesus Christ all people are of equal value, have equal access to Jesus, can achieve great things for the Lord and have the potential to store up treasure in heaven equally! To that I say Amen!

THE CHALLENGE

It was challenge to me not to mix these two up in my mind. God says to renew our minds. Ladies/wives we need to understand our responsibilities and challenges that God had given us in His design.

Respect Him: Ephesians 5:33b – “and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”

One way to respect your husband is to ask him your spiritual questions.

Realize that God will use him (saved or unsaved) to give you guidance. (1 Cor. 14:35)

Accept Him: Confidence that God is working through him (Romans 8:28)

Be Grateful for Him: (1 Thess. 5:18- “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”) HERE’S HOW

Giving expectations to God and taking them off your husband.

Learning contentment with Godliness (Col. 3:1) growing character

Influence Him: Gain influence by not rehearsing past failures but by demonstrating present faithfulness in these areas:

Genuine love; loyalty; servant’s heart; asking forgiveness

Work on goals together with your husband

Influence him by LIVING IN THE NOW LADIES!! LOVE IN THE NOW!!

HUSBANDS: We to need to understand our challenge in the responsibility that is given to us in God’s design.

Husbands need to understand that they are not on the top of the chain of command. As the wife is under the husband, so is the husband under Christ. We need to look up for our direction & answers.

We are given the responsibility to be spiritual leaders. Our wives need to experience us actually leading spiritually. This means four things:

Regular times in God’s Word

Faithfulness in prayer

Regular church attendance

Discussion of spiritual matters, followed by searching the scriptures for God’s answer.

Our wives need to know that they are meeting vital needs in our lives that no one else can meet. (sharing our fears, goals, heart)

Our wives need to know that we will listen to hear their heart. They need to know that we are making efforts to understand them.

But honey, do you UNDERSTAND what I mean?

Do you UNDERSTAND what I am trying to say?

If our wives don’t think we will even try to understand them they will get discouraged, then lose hope, that leads to depression.

BEACH STORY

INTRODUCTION

As we continue to look at the Christian home these next few weeks, this morning we will focus our attention on “little ones.”

I would like to go directly to the scriptures this morning and right to the words that Jesus spoke in Matthew 18:1-4; 10.

This command of Jesus to despise not one of these little ones was initiated by a question His disciples asked him: “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

KINGDOM GREATS:

Greatest in the kingdom of computers: Bill Gates

Greatest in the kingdom of TV talk shows: Oprah

Greatest in the kingdom of rock-n-roll: Elvis Presley

Greatest in the kingdom of baseball: Babe Ruth

Greatest in the kingdom on authors: William Shakespeare

Greatest in the kingdom of composers: Bach

The greatest in the kingdom of heaven is a whole different question. (eternity)

Jesus calls a little child to himself and basically shocks the disciples.

Then in Matt. 18:10 – Jesus says, take heed that you despise not one of these little ones!

THE BIBLE IS VERY CLEAR IN WHO IS KEY IN RAISING “THESE LITTLE ONES”

Malachi 4:6 – “And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children.”

Luke 1:17 – “And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children.”

Proverbs 23:36 – “My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.”

Ephesians 6:4 – “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

WHAT IS THE ENEMY’S GOAL IN EVERY HOME?

Matthew 12:29 – “Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? And then he will spoil his house.”

The enemy wants the spoils, the little ones, the next generation. So he is active in binding the strong man (dad) so he can get at the hearts & minds of the children.

Psalm 127:3 – “Children are a heritage of the Lord.”

WHAT IS THE ENEMY’S PLAN?

To persuade men to “despise” the little ones God has given them.

Jesus commanded, “Take heed, that ye despise not one of these little ones.”

What does Jesus mean and why did He have to warn us of it?

DESPISE

The word that Jesus used for despise implies motion downward, have an opinion of.

Despising a little one begins by thinking that they are not very important or valuable.

Right away we dismiss ourselves because we believe our little ones are very important and valuable to us.

But is what we think a reality in the lives of our children.

About 85% of young people raised their hand when asked the question: “Have you done things that you know are wrong and have not yet told your dad about?”

Why? Because my dad loves me but he doesn’t understand me.

The things in our lives that are important and valuable to us we take the time, energy and investment to understand them.

Our sons & daughters will trust us as far as we understand them, after that they pull back and trust friends, TV, movie, music, sport heroes and whoever else is available.

Three things hinder every dad: Mark 4:19 – “The cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.”

OBSTACLES

Two of the greatest obstacles for every dad to overcome are these:

Despising little ones is caused by thinking that they have little or nothing to contribute to our lives and that we are more important than they are.

Despising little ones is often motivated when our personal freedoms are limited because of their needs or weaknesses.

If we are obligated to make adjustments in our schedules or choices of activities in order to advance the welfare of a little one, we tend to get frustrated and resentful.

ANSWER

Pursue your children’s heart. Go and get it. Win their favor.

Make a life changing covenant that your goal is now to get their heart.

It will cost you time, energy, money, hobbies, maybe even friendships, but the reward will far outweigh all of those and more put together.
